Aguntum
The world of the Romans as Osttirol experienced it! An archaeological park and an impressive museum provide insights into the everyday life and architecture of the Roman town of Aguntum. Emperor Claudius (41 - 54 AD) elevated the settlement to a municipium (town), which flourished for two centuries. In Aguntum you can see remains and visualisations of the city wall, private and public buildings and even a thermal bath. Only a small part of the excavations has been scientifically investigated so far. A newly built café and restaurant complete the excursion.
Bruck Castle
The Lienz Museum is enthroned in the imposing Bruck Castle, slightly elevated above the sunny town. The former seat of the Counts of Gorizia was a place of refuge and defence, and after several renovations and additions it became a representative and administrative building. Not only the counts of Gorizia, but also the barons of Wolkenstein-Rodenegg resided in the castle, which has been owned by the town of Lienz since 1943. History and art from East Tyrol as well as the architecture of the castle itself can be admired in over 40 showrooms. The Egger-Lienz Gallery houses the largest collection of works by the local artist. Impressive: the two-storey castle chapel dating back to the 13th century with frescoes by the painter Simon von Taisten. The café and the area around the castle pond are also suitable for children and pushchairs.

Albin Egger-Lienz memorial chapel & hike
The painter Albin Egger-Lienz (1868-1926) became famous for his monumental, decorative oil paintings and is our town's best-known artist. In 1899 he was awarded the Great Golden State Medal of the Künstlerhaus Vienna for his painting The Cross. Albin Egger studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1884 to 1893. He then worked as a freelance artist in Vienna and was a member of the Hagenbund and the Vienna Secession. Egger Lienz was preoccupied with existential situations. His works revolve around suffering, death, becoming and passing away. From 1906, he repeatedly took up the motif of the dance of death.
The father's house of Albin Egger Lienz (GERMAN) is only a few steps away from the Zuegg Suiten in Schweizergasse. The Egger Lienz Square with the Egger Lienz bust is located directly in front of our house. Das Albin Egger's tomb (GERMAN) can be found on the grounds of St Andrä parish church in the war memorial chapel, which he himself designed with frescoes. The Egger Lienz trail, which starts at St Anthony's Church and leads to Bruck Castle, connects all these points.
Heinfels Castle
Heinfels Castle, built around 1210, was extensively restored between 2010 and 2016 and has not only been given architectural highlights, but also a museum. The chapel built in 1280 with frescoes by Leonhard von Brixen, the teacher of Simon von Taisten, is particularly impressive. As part of the renovation, the castle chapel was given an extraordinary ceiling as a contrast - designed and planned by architect Gerhard Mitterberger. Heinfels Castle is also known as the “Queen of Val Pusteria”, it was owned by the Counts of Gorizia and later fell to Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg.
Open-air museum Alpine Life Innervillgraten
This museum is also an incentive to visit one of the most original, authentic mountain villages in Austria - the Villgratental! Building culture, innovation and rural working culture are at the centre of the museum area at the entrance to the Arntal in Innervillgraten. The Lodenstampf, mill, Einhof, alpine hut and entrance house have been built, remodelled and renovated over the last few months and years. The Wegelate sawmill is the last Venetian sawmill in Austria and the centrepiece of the ensemble. The sawmill, which is now a listed building, was built in 1883 and still tells the story of alpine life today! You can combine this cultural visit with a visit to the Villgrater Natur Haus in Innervillgraten, Mühlmann Moden in Außervillgraten and a detour to Loacker in Heinfels!
